Quick Actions for Common Eye Emergencies

Taking the right steps in the moments after an eye emergency can make a significant difference. Here are some guidelines on what you can do in common situations before you reach professional care.

Chemical exposure to the eyes can happen unexpectedly, whether from cleaning agents or industrial chemicals. If chemicals come into contact with your eyes:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water to avoid further contamination.
  • Tilt your head so the affected eye faces down and to the side.
  • Hold the affected eyelid open and flush with cool, clean water for at least 15 minutes.

For chemical-related emergencies, contact us or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Small particles, like dust, can sometimes be flushed out by blinking or with artificial tear drops. However, larger objects, like glass or metal, should never be removed on your own as this can worsen the injury. Seek professional care to prevent further damage.

The cornea is the eye’s outermost layer, protecting the iris and pupil. Even a minor scratch on the cornea can lead to infection if left untreated. Avoid rubbing the eye, and contact our office for immediate help or visit the nearest emergency room.

Any trauma that punctures or scratches the eyeball or eyelids needs urgent medical attention. Place a loose bandage over the area to protect it, but do not apply any pressure. Seek professional care immediately.
