Fostering Healthy Vision for Your Kids
Helping your child see clearly can be crucial for their overall development. Vision challenges like myopia can significantly affect their academic performance and daily life.
While school screenings are helpful, they often don’t provide the in-depth insights needed to provide preventive care and long-term support for your child’s vision and eye health.
At Huron Optometric Centres, we offer thorough eye exams that give us a complete picture of your child’s visual development. This enables us to detect and address any potential issues early and support your child throughout their life.
Book your child’s next eye exam with our team today.

Our Recommended Eye Exam Schedule for Kids
Following the guidelines set by the Canadian Association of Optometrists, we recommend the following eye exam schedule:
- First eye exam between 6–9 months old
- Second evaluation between 2–5 years old
- Exams every year for children 6–19 years old
Depending on your child’s specific visual needs, our optometrists may recommend a personalized exam schedule that differs from the suggestions above.

Myopia Control at Huron Optometric Centres
Myopia (nearsightedness) is a common vision issue among children that can affect their ability to see clearly at a distance. If left untreated, myopia can hinder both academic performance and participation in activities like sports.
We offer several effective myopia control options at Huron Optometric Centres, including MyoCare lenses, atropine eye drops, and Abiliti 1-Day contacts.
Recognizing Signs of Vision Problems in Children
Children may struggle to talk about their vision concerns, or they may not realize that what they’re experiencing is a problem. Keep an eye out for these signs that could indicate vision issues:
- Frequent squinting
- Rubbing their eyes often
- Sitting very close to screens
- Avoiding close-up tasks like reading
- Losing their place while reading
- Using their finger as a guide when reading
- Holding reading materials too close
- Complaining of frequent headaches
- Experiencing double vision
- Covering one eye when looking at objects
- Tilting their head to one side
- Having misaligned eyes
If you notice any of these signs, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with us. Your proactive approach today can make a significant difference in your child’s visual future.
What to Expect During Your Child’s Eye Exam
During your child’s eye exam, we will conduct a comprehensive assessment that evaluates the following visual skills and abilities:
- Visual Acuity: Clarity of vision at varying distances
- Eye Focusing: Ability to maintain clear vision during focus changes
- Eye Tracking: Coordination of eye movement when shifting focus
- Eye Teaming: Using both eyes together for depth perception
- Hand-Eye Coordination: Processing visual information to guide hand movements
- Visual Perception: Organizing images into letters, words, and ideas
The Eye See…Eye Learn Program
Huron Optometric Centres is proud to participate in the Eye See…Eye Learn program. This program offers comprehensive eye exams conducted by local optometrists for junior kindergarten students in participating school regions.
These eye exams are covered under provincial health insurance (OHIP) when you present your child’s health card, so there are usually no out-of-pocket expenses for the exam.
If your child needs glasses, they will receive a complimentary pair generously donated by Nikon Lenswear, OGI, and your participating optometrist. The value of these glasses is estimated to be over $250.
